How to Prepare for a Facial: What to Do Before Your Appointment
Preparing for a facial doesn't have to be complicated. A few simple steps can help your skin feel more comfortable during treatment and allow your esthetician to choose the most appropriate approach for your needs.
At Ennovi Spa, every facial starts with understanding your skin — how it behaves, what it needs, and what you use at home. Whether your goal is relaxation, hydration, a brighter complexion, or more targeted skin improvement, your preparation helps us personalize your experience.
1. Tell Your Esthetician About Your Skincare Routine
One of the most helpful things you can do before a facial is to share what you currently use on your skin. We discuss all of these during your consultation.
Let your esthetician know if your routine includes:
Retinol, retinaldehyde, or prescription retinoids
Exfoliating acids such as glycolic, lactic, mandelic, or salicylic acid
Benzoyl peroxide or other acne treatments
Brightening products or prescription skincare
Any recently introduced products that may be causing irritation
You don't need to memorize every ingredient. Bringing photos of your products or a list of their names is perfectly fine.
Should you stop using active skincare products before a facial?
It depends on the products you're using and the treatment you're receiving. Retinoids and exfoliating acids may increase skin sensitivity, particularly before peels or other exfoliating treatments.
For most treatments, it is recommended to pause certain active products for several days beforehand, unless they are prescription products, which you should use according to your prescriber's instructions. Don't automatically stop every active ingredient before every facial. Check with your prescriber before changing how you use them. Follow the preparation instructions provided for your specific treatment. Just let your esthetician know you've been using them. This way, we can adjust the treatment to meet your skin’s needs.
2. Share Your Medications, Allergies, and Skin Reactions
Your skin can respond differently to a treatment depending on your medications, sensitivities, and health history.
Before your appointment, tell your esthetician about:
Prescription medications and relevant over-the-counter medications
Known allergies, including reactions to skincare ingredients, fragrances, botanicals, or latex
Skin conditions or recurring sensitivity that may affect treatment suitability
Past reactions to facials, peels, masks, or skincare products
Any current redness, burning, itching, peeling, or unusual breakouts
Be specific about the reaction you experienced, even if it seemed minor. Stinging, swelling, hives, and persistent redness can provide important clues when selecting products and techniques.
If you have a known allergy to a medication or ingredient, mention it even if you haven't reacted to a facial product before.
If your skin is currently inflamed, injured, or experiencing an unexplained reaction, contact your esthetician before your appointment. Your treatment may need to be modified or postponed.
3. Let Your Esthetician Know About Recent Skin Treatments
Have you recently had a chemical peel, microneedling, laser treatment, waxing, injectable treatment, or another professional skin procedure?
Please share what you had done and when.
Different procedures require different recovery periods. Your skin may need time to recover before you receive additional exfoliation, massage, heat, or other treatments.
If you've recently had Botox, fillers, or another injectable procedure, follow your treating provider's aftercare instructions and get clearance when needed before scheduling a facial that involves massage or pressure.
When in doubt, share the details before your appointment rather than waiting until you arrive.
4. Protect Your Skin From Excessive Sun Exposure
Sunburned or recently irritated skin may be more vulnerable during a facial, especially one involving exfoliation or active ingredients.
In the days leading up to your appointment:
Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply as directed.
Avoid tanning and intentional excessive sun exposure.
Let your esthetician know if you've recently had a sunburn or significant sun exposure.
You don't necessarily need to cancel because you've spent time outdoors. However, sunburn, unusual redness, or tenderness may mean that a gentler approach or a different appointment date is more appropriate.
Protecting your skin from the sun should always be part of your long-term skin health. This will also help to maintain the results of your treatments.
5. Keep Your Skin Comfortable Before Your Visit
You don't need to do an intensive skincare routine to prepare for a facial.
Instead:
Cleanse gently and moisturize as usual, unless you've received different instructions.
Avoid experimenting with new products right before your appointment.
Don't perform an extra peel, scrub, or aggressive exfoliation to prepare your skin.
Avoid picking at blemishes or irritating the skin.
Arrive with a clean face if convenient, but don't worry if you wear makeup. Your esthetician can cleanse your skin.
If your skin feels unusually dry, tight, itchy, or sensitive, mention it when you arrive.
6. Know What You Want From Your Facial — and How You Want to Feel
Your facial isn't just about the products applied to your skin. It's also an opportunity to communicate what you need from the experience.
Think about your priorities. Are you hoping to:
Replenish hydration and feel comfortable?
Address uneven tone, congestion, or visible signs of skin stress?
Support skin firmness and healthy aging?
Enjoy a quiet, restorative experience and release tension?
You don't need to know which treatment or ingredients are right for you. That's part of the consultation.
At Ennovi Spa, we also adapt the experience to your preferences. If you'd like to talk, we’ll talk. If you prefer silence, we'll respect that. If relaxation is your priority, we'll give space for you to unwind.
The more we understand your skin and your needs, the better we can personalize your treatment.

Contact your esthetician if your skin is irritated, sunburned, or reacting unexpectedly.
A final thought
You don't need perfect skin or a perfect routine before coming in for a facial.
Your skin is allowed to be sensitive, dehydrated, congested, or simply in need of rest. My role is to understand what it's telling us and select an approach that respects its condition.
At Ennovi Spa, healthy skin comes first — and every treatment begins with listening.

Frequently Asked Questions Before Your First Facial
Should I stop using retinol before a facial?
Retinol and other retinoids may increase skin sensitivity, especially before exfoliating treatments or chemical peels. Ask your esthetician how long to pause them based on your specific treatment, and if you’re using a prescribed retinoid, consult your prescriber before changing prescription use. Just tell your esthetician you’re using a prescribed retinoid.
Should I arrive at my facial with a clean face?
A clean face is helpful, but it isn't essential. Your esthetician will cleanse your skin before treatment, so there's no need to worry if you arrive wearing makeup.
Can I get a facial if my skin is irritated or sunburned?
It depends on the severity and cause. Sunburned, broken, or significantly irritated skin may need time to recover before treatment. Contact your esthetician before your appointment to determine the safest next step.
